Government Bodies in Mysore

Mysore city is located 770 meters above the level of sea and it is at a distance of 140 kilometers from Bangalore. The administration and the maintenance of the Mysore District is looked after by the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate who attend the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner is also responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the district of Mysore. Head Quarters Assistant is the boy who is responsible of assisting the Deputy Commissioner in his work. The Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Head of the Revenue district. The Revenue district of Mysore consists of two sub-divisions that are headed by Assistant Commissioners. The sub-divisions have Talukas that are run by Tahsildars. The Talukas have been divided into Hoblis that are looked after by the Revenue inspectors. Villages comprise the Hoblis and there are Village accountants who have the responsibility of maintaining the revenue records and collecting revenues within the villages. The administration of Mysore district is headed by the Deputy Commissioner who is assisted by Office Assistant. The Deputy Commissioner serves as the only officer who has the power to exercise rules and regulations under the laws that are both central and state.

The Main Functions of Mysore District Administration

Magisterial matters and Law and Order: The very first function of the Deputy Commissioner summed under District Administration is public tranquility and safety. The district administration office of the Mysore district also looks into the maintenance of law and order in Mysore. The jails, petroleum bunks, cinemas, citizenship licenses, armed licenses and LPG cylinder storage all fall into the supervision of District Magistrate.

Land Revenue: revenue administration is the second function that is served by the district administration of Mysore. The function includes land administration, land records maintenance and land revenue collection and assessment. Land disputes and laws pertaining to land are also supervised and guided by the district administration or Deputy Commissioner of Mysore.

Development activities: schemes like MLAD, MPLAD, Calamity Drought and Ashraya have been implemented by the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore for the welfare of the people of Mysore.
Election: the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore also works in the form of District election Officer. He is the body who is responsible for all the elections that are organised within the district of Mysore. He acts as the Returning Officer for South Teachers Constituency, Parliamentary Constituency and South Graduate Constituency. The other lections that are looked after by the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore are:

Census: The Deputy Commissioner of Mysore also serves as the District Incharge of census that is conducted every ten years. Agriculture census, Irrigation census and cattle census operations are also conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore.

Matters of Municipal Administration: The Deputy Commissioner of Mysore also looks after the proper functioning and the supervision of local bodies in the urban areas of Mysore.

Emergency Relief: In circumstances like famines, floods, earthquakes, accidental fires and various other calamities that are natural, the entire responsibility is taken up by the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore who forms the Disaster Management Group.

Matters of Land Acquisition: Land acquisition for purposes of the public like construction of bridges, roads, industries and irrigation channels is approved by the Officer Incharge for Land Acquisition under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore.

Residuary Functions: There are many executive functions related to the Government that have not been defined precisely and there are no representatives appointed for the management of such functions by the Government. Therefore, the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore is also responsible of carrying out residuary matters. Such functions include Red Cross, Family Planning, Social Welfare Schemes on the district level, Minority Schemes and Department Works.

Assistant Commissioner of Mysore

The assistant commissioner of Mysore is responsible for looking after the administration and the maintenance of the Talukas in Mysore and at the same time the Assistant Commissioner also looks after the Development Departments and the revenue Department.

Tehsildar

The Tehsildar is considered to be the head of the Talukas in Mysore. The Tehsildar works under the Assistant Commissioner and the main responsibility of the Tehsildar is to maintain land records, collect land revenue, survey and collection of other dues related to the Government. The Tehsildar has the Revenue Inspectors, the Deputy Tehsildar and the Village Accountants under his control and supervision.
